Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast

There's plenty of the Mediterranean Sea here to enjoy here...if you can get to it! The highway we took from Naples to Sorrento looked down on deep blue and aqua water that looked more like a fjord than an inviting beach recreation area. Breathtakingly beautiful, the cliffs and rocks along the shoreline were just below some of the most expensive real estate in Italy. Christobal told us that vacationing Italians can pay as much as 3000 Euros (@$4,000.) a month to rent a place near here in the summer, and then you have the daunting prospect of trying to get down to the small beaches at the base. Good luck.

Lots of expensive yachts moored in a small harbor

Lemons the size of grapefruits surprised us. According to our guide, only the zest of these lemons is used to make a locally-famous liquor called Lemoncello (we think that's the right spelling, but we're not even absolutely sure of the name). The juice of this huge lemon is used for a drink more to our liking: lemonade.

Pizza was invented during the 18th Century by King Ferdinand I of Naples. We couldn't leave this area without dining at an authentic local garden restaurant and having some real Italian pizza from the area of its origin. Then we all accidentally ordered calzone! Close enough. They tasted pretty much the same as pizza, so we were happy!

First time for some authentic Italian flavors!
